EDUCATION

Trinity College Cambridge 1987

LANGUAGES

English

I trained at Trinity College Cambridge and the Clinical School, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and was one of the few students to be awarded the William Harvey Studentship in consecutive years. I qualified in 1987, receiving the London FRCS in 1992. In 1996 I was awarded an MD on the molecular biology of breast cancer by the University of Cambridge and received the Intercollegiate Fellowship in General Surgery. In 1999, having been appointed as Consultant Surgeon in Colchester, I joined 108 Medical Chambers where I am now Surgical Director of the Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic, which has treated more than 8000 people for groin problems, including over 400 internationals, since it was founded in 1980. It pioneered the team approach to diagnosis and treatment of groin problems and is part of the London Sports Injury Clinic. The standard anatomical repair of Gilmore’s Groin is now termed the Marsh Modification of the Gilmore Technique, reflecting the adaptations that have been made since 2010. In 1996 I set up, and still run, the Ivry Street Minor Surgery Unit in Ipswich, Suffolk where I perform local anaesthetic surgery, including around 200 vasectomies a year. I established the MD research programme at the University of Essex, where I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer. I also teach at the University of East Anglia. I ran the North Essex training programme for 5 years and has been an instructor for ATLS, APLS, ALERT, CCrISP and BSS. I am a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Hospital Consultants and Specialist Association. I have published papers on in vitro fertilisation, breast cancer, and bowel cancer, molecular biology of cancer, Gilmore’s Groin and hernias. I'm currently involved with cancer research at the University of Essex. I have an interest in sports medicine and has advised on many sports, including equestrian events, motorcycle speedway and rugby. I have also presented a weekly local radio show for 5 years and has produced articles for the BBC as well as making a documentary for Channel 4!
