What is a GP?

A general practitioner, or GP, is a doctor who provides general healthcare services. They are often the first port of call for any problems. In the UK, the NHS provides a system of primary care administered by GP-led practices, with which patients can be registered, and receive care for free via the NHS. However, it is also possible to find and visit a GP privately. Private GPs may either be employed by private health providers or work independently.

Like any other doctor, GPs must be registered on the General Medical Council’s List of Registered Medical Practitioners to practise in the UK. If they also work in general practice in the health service in the UK, they must be included on the GMC’s GP Register.

When to see a GP?

You should see a general practitioner if you notice any changes to your general disposition or develop health problems which are impacting your day-to-day life. Whilst it is thought that GPs only treat minor health issues, quite often – a GP appointment can help spot the warning signs of a more serious condition. That is why it is important to always see a GP, even for your most minor concerns. Often, your GP will analyse your symptoms and run some tests – if they notice any irregularities, they will then refer you to a specialist for further testing and treatment.

Symptoms or problems a GP can help with include, but are not limited to:

  • Coughs and colds
  • Physical pain
  • Headaches and mental health problems such as anxiety or depression
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Headaches
  • Changes in your skin
  • Changes in your bowel habits

If you have previously been diagnosed with a long-term condition, you may need regular check-ups with a GP to monitor your treatment and progress.

How do I register with a private GP?

With Medstars, there is no need to register with a GP beforehand – all you have to do is find your preferred GP on our website and request an appointment.

How do I book a private GP appointment?

To book an appointment with your preferred GP visit their Medstars page and click on request appointment. You will then complete a quick online form to tell your GP why you would like to see them and your availability preference. It is helpful to provide the practitioner with as much detail as possible to ensure they can make an accurate diagnosis – if you are unsure of your medical history, you may want to obtain your medical records from the NHS, just to be on the safe side.

How much does it cost to see a private GP?

The cost of your private GP appointment will depend on the individual practitioner you are seeing. First consultations tend to vary from £120 – £175. However, this will be solely dependent on your GP’s rates – the first consultation will usually include a discussion of your symptoms, any pre-existing medical conditions you may have, as well as your family history. Your first appointment may include a physical examination although this may depend on your symptoms. Additional diagnostic tests will be charged separately from the consultation and your treatment costs will be dependent on the treatment plan.

How to prepare for your GP appointment

To make the most of your GP appointment, there are some things you should prepare beforehand:

  • Bring any medications that are prescribed, or you’re currently taking, along with you
  • Ensure you have a list of any important medical history they need to know about
  • Make a list of your symptoms and concerns
