Medstars in their Eyes | Mr Alan Dovey

Alan Dovey

Medstars met with Consultant Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, Alan Dovey, at his Birmingham clinic.

Alan’s experience speaks for itself, having worked for years as a mental health nurse prior to becoming a senior cognitive behavioural therapist, Alan is currently the lead Consultant Psychotherapist to Jaguar Land Rover Ltd in the West Midlands as well as the West Midlands Fire Service. Impressive!

However, expertise aside, we wanted to find out more about Alan himself. So, without further ado, lets find out what makes a psychotherapist tick!

My friends and family describe me as…

“Kind, generous and laid-back.”

If I wasn’t a psychotherapist, I would be a…

“Comedian!” Alan’s favourite comedian is Lee Evans.

My favourite element of the job is…

“Seeing people take control of their lives and watching the progress they make over time.”

My greatest professional accomplishment has to be…

“Lecturing at the World Congress in cognitive behavioural science in Japan in 2005. That said, I was equally as proud recently after speaking to a class of 10-year-olds about mental health at their school in Birmingham. They sent me a lovely thank you letter after our chat!’  Alan encouraged the children to meet face to face with their friends, as opposed to just communicating via phone and explained ‘although modern technology allows us to remain constantly connected, neglecting face to face contact can leave us feeling detached.”

My hero/heroine is…

“Although I hate to admit it… my older brother is my hero!  He is a couple of years older than me and a great family man.” (Don’t worry Alan, we won’t tell anyone…)

I believe one thing everyone should do in their life is…

“Change something! It’s easy to get stuck in habits, and after time these habits can start to own you. Let’s say someone cleans their car every Sunday, if they have to skip that activity one week they become anxious and worried. Change is good and sometimes necessary for recovery.”

If I could eat one meal for the rest of my life (breakfast, lunch and dinner), it would be…

“Prawn pasta chilli.” (It was a toss up between prawn salad and chilli and after much debate this was the result!)

If I could be any animal in the world, I would be a…

“Cat. They’re relaxed, laid back and astute – a bit like me!”

Thank you letter from student

If I was stranded on a desert island, my belonging of choice would be an…

“Ipod!” (Alan did toy with the idea of taking his partner along, but it seems his passion for music was too strong!)

The one song that makes me happy is…

Only Love Can Hurt Like This – Paloma Faith.”

I like Medstars because…

“It’s a transparent, honest and ethical business based on sound principles of ensuring the public can access appropriately trained and qualified individuals for their healthcare. It’s also a young and energetic business which encourages me to adapt in this ever changing world of healthcare.”
