Medstars in their Eyes | Dr Satbinder Bhogal | Clinical Psychologist in Birmingham

Saty Bhogal

Medstars spoke with clinical psychologist, Dr Satbinder Bhogal, who has over 18 years’ experience working in mental health.

In addition to her NHS and private work, Satbinder is an active member of Birmingham-based charity, Sikh your mind. The charity aims to increase awareness of mental health issues in the Punjabi and Sikh community. Satbinder and other psychologists visit temples across the UK to discuss taboo subjects such as homosexuality, addiction and eating disorders. Those in need are then directed to the appropriate support. The charity began as a group of friends wanting to make a difference in their local area and has developed into an organisation that assists people across the world via their social media platforms, making a massive difference in hard to reach communities.

However, luckily for us, Satbinder still made time to pencil in a quick chat…

My friends and family describe me as…

“Kind, appreciative and pretty normal.”

If I wasn’t a clinical psychologist…

“I would be a vet as I love animals and enjoy safari holidays.”

My favourite element of the job is…

“Helping people to understand their difficulties and encouraging people to adjust their outlook on life.”

My greatest professional accomplishment is…

“Becoming a clinical psychologist. It has provided me with a platform to make a difference – not just on an individual level but at an organisational level.” Satbinder has an interest in working with young people who are ‘looked after’ and has worked with residential childcare providers, social services departments and fostering and adoption agencies to provide her mental health input and training.  Satbinder has also worked in schools, providing training for teachers and other school professionals in understanding and working with ‘looked after’ children in a school setting.

My hero/heroine is…

“My mother. She has shown great strength and, despite some very traumatic experiences, she continues to try her best in life.”

I believe one thing everyone should experience in their life is…

“A feeling that they are good enough!”

If I was stranded on a desert island, my belonging of choice would be…

“This is a hard one. I think Yorkshire teabags because my tea breaks are very important to me. I would miss a good cup of tea!” Satbinder wouldn’t choose a phone because she emphasises the importance of living in the moment in an increasingly digital society. Satbinder explains a simple way to do this is to leave your phone at home or in your bag when you are out with friends and family.

The best and worst advice I have been given…

“The best advice was from an ex manager who said I needed to sprinkle magic to not only patients but organisations as well. The worst advice was someone who told me to choose another career. I learned how not to be a manager and developed my own style of supporting others.”

I would love to visit…

“Bali – it looks beautiful and scenic.”

The song that makes me happy is…

“I don’t listen to music but I enjoy reading anything by Irvin Yalom.”

I like Medstars because…

“I feel connected to the team!”

Saty’s favourite author, Irvin Yalom
