I was awarded my medical degree at the University of Cambridge and went on to undertake my clinical training at The Royal London Hospital. Shortly afterwards I joined the internationally renowned department of endocrinology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital where I gained unrivalled experience in clinical endocrinology. After completing my MD research degree, I was appointed as a senior lecturer and then reader in endocrinology and honorary consultant endocrinologist within the NHS. For over 10 years I have led the Endocrine service at Homerton University Hospital. Some years ago, I decided to devote more time to my clinical work and after 20 years in practice, I established The London Endocrine Centre where I hold the position of senior consultant. My specialist areas include disorders of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, as well as diabetes. I have also developed considerable expertise in the diagnosis and management of chronic fatigue, with patients often travelling from across the world to come and see me. I firmly believing in giving something back to the medical community, not only to my colleagues but for the betterment of patient care. I am actively involved in research and have been published in more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers in my field as well as writing several books and text-book chapters. I have been awarded numerous academic grants for my research and often invited to lecture extensively in the UK and abroad on my findings. I was also the dean for pre-registration doctors and love to teach undergraduate students across all years. I took on the responsibility to ensure medical students were being taught only the most up to date medicine backed by research and evidence. My approach to patients is often holistic and allow plenty of time to discuss all their concerns and wishes before fully involving them in a shared approach to their optimum management. I believe that rather than be rigidly beholden to laboratory ‘normal ranges’, the optimum care of a patient’s condition frequently requires an understanding of their symptoms in conjunction with appropriate interpretation of laboratory results and diagnostic imaging. I have always had excellent patient feedback and my patients particularly appreciate the time I give to listen to them, impart clinical information in a readily understandable manner and involve them in a structured and carefully thought out management plan. When surgery is required I have a close working relationship with Medstars expert endocrine surgeon, Fausto Palazzo.
