I was appointed a Consultant Dermatologist in 1999 with subspecialty expertise in skin cancer management. I have been Clinical Director for Dermatology for the past eleven years at the Heart of England Foundation Trust and subsequently, University Hospitals Birmingham. I am proud to have helped establish a new Department of Dermatology at Solihull, which is now one of the largest units in the West Midlands. The department has gained national recognition and has been shortlisted for Hospital Doctor Team of the Year award. I established the Mohs’ micrographic surgery service in the West Midlands. Mohs' surgery has come to be accepted as the single most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinomas and Squamous Cell Carcinomas, the two most common skin cancers. It also spares the greatest amount of healthy tissue. This service attracts patients from Birmingham and beyond. I have played an integral role in the design of a state-of-the-art facility where the surgery is undertaken. I have been fortunate in developing a regional and national profile, particularly in leading the management of skin cancer. I have been involved in several committees regarding clinical care as well as cost effectiveness of treatment and these have included Clinical Lead for the Action of Dermatology programme, Chair of the Regional Skin Cancer Committee and Lead Clinician for Skin Cancer at Heart of England Foundation Trust. More recently, I have been appointed president of the Midlands Dermatology Society. I have been involved with dermatological research projects publishing in excess of 25 papers. I play an active role nationally in skin surgery teaching and am an invited faculty member at national and international meetings for skin cancer and skin surgery, including the British Society of Dermatological Surgery. I have also been involved in developing several regional and national guidelines on skin cancer care and I am the co -author of Mohs’ service guidelines which are to be published in the near future. Most recently, I was proud to have received the ‘Building Healthier Lives’ clinical excellence award. This award is open to all 10,000 members of staff at the hospital and is nominated by both patients and staff. This is an acknowledgement of clinical care and contribution to the health service and I am the only dermatologist to have ever been awarded this. Away from work I relax with my family. I love hill walking, skiing, and squash.
