Consultant Ophthalmologist

map markerBirmingham

I am passionate about advancing new eye surgery techniques to get the best for my patients. My research is very varied and ranges from new intraocular implants for cataract and lens surgery to ways to reduce the need for reading glasses and even to dry eye . I relax with yoga and combine my love of travel with my role as International Medical Director for the charity Khmer Sight Foundation saving eye sight in Cambodia.

I qualified from the University of London St. Georges Hospital Medical School in 1987. I then specialised in eye surgery gaining my Fellowship of Royal College of Ophthalmologists and becoming a Fellow Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 1992. I now work as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre , City Hospital Birmingham and an Honorary Consultant at the Birmingham Children's Hospital . As Professor of Aston University, Birmingham, I am an active researcher. My current research interest is understanding how differing corneal thicknesses can affect the measured pressure inside the eye, novel intra-ocular lenses and long sightedness (presbyopia). I specialise in complex corneal and refractive surgery. I was instrumental in developing the laser eye surgery technique now called LASEK that is now used my many surgeons across the UK and I was the first person to use it in Britain. I continue to work for the Refractive Working Party for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and am a Specialist Advisor to NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence) as well as the British Standards Institute. I am President of British Contact Lens Association and examiner for the Refractive Assessment of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. I am particularly proud of my work in Cambodia as Medical Director for Khmer Sight Foundation. A charity that has now worked with over 120 surgeons saving the sight of thousands of patients who would not normally have access to this healthcare. Currently we are working to build a new hospital to extend this work further.
