I have been an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Mental health unit in Birmingham since 1978 and in addition to general psychiatry, I have expertise in the psychiatry of physical disorders, eating disorders, trauma, brain injury, occupational health, and medico legal matters. As a Liaison Psychiatrist, I have specialist interests and expertise in the psychological factors associated with the following physical conditions: cardiac conditions; eating disorders; gastrointestinal disorders; gynaecological disorders; musculoskeletal conditions; neurological disorders; oncology; pain management; psychophysiological disorders; physical disability and rheumatological conditions. My Doctorate research included a study of the psychological effects of accidental trauma. As a result, I have become an expert in this field and my interest is sought in the effects of trauma and additionally on cases of medical negligence. I received the Edgbaston Proprietary Prize in 1958 and the White Prize in Psychological Medicine from Kings College Hospital in 1969. Additionally, I looked after the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit as a Neuropsychiatrist for over 10 years and in this time co-founded the Neuropsychiatric Association. I am also a Human Tissue Authority assessor. I have chaired various trusts and clubs, and I'm currently a Committee Member of the Birmingham Medical Institute and The Royal Society of Medicine. I am also a Royal College of Psychiatrists Examiner. Over the years I have taken up both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching roles and I am proud to have published over 50 articles, editorials and journals on a wide range of topics ranging from Capgras and De Cerambault Syndrome to Attitudes of Doctors in the Event of Them Becoming Mentally Ill.
