- Ethos & Expertise I believe that knowledge is power and will try to help you understand your condition so you are part of the decision making process to ensure your treatment occurs in the manner in which you want it to. I feel that surgery should always be the last resort and will try all non-surgical options first. I am an expert in the use of needles around the spine including nerve root blocks, facet joint injections and radiofrequency ablation. I have recently pioneered the use of a laser, passed down a spinal needle, reducing the pressure on spinal nerves thereby reducing leg pain. I have over 300 testimonials from the last 10 years, which can be viewed here: www.thebackpainandlegpainspecialist.com - Professional Profile I qualified in medicine from The University of Cambridge in 1991, as well as having a First Class Degree in Clinical Pharmacology from The University of London. Subsequently I was a Medical Research Council (MRC) Research Fellow and a Smith and Nephew Foundation Scholar. I have won Travelling Fellowships from the British Orthopaedic Association Foundation and The Worshipful Company of Barbers. I hold dual Fellowships from both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Additionally I hold the Specialist Intercollegiate Fellowship examination in Orthopaedics, having passed their rigorous examinations. I am particularly interested in the genetics of disc degeneration holding a Higher Doctorate in Medicine (DM) in this subject. I was subsequently awarded the prestigious British Orthopaedic Association’s Sir Robert Jones Gold Medal as well as a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in recognition of my research. My specialist spinal training was completed on the two year Combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spinal Program in Vancouver, Canada. I returned to the UK in 2008 to take up my substantive NHS consultant post at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. In 2013 having dedicated over 20 years to the NHS, I made the decision to concentrate my efforts exclusively in the private sector. I am actively involved in education and lectures at The University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University as well as examining final year medical students at Birmingham Medical School. I regularly tutor prospective candidates for the rigorous FRCS(Orth) final examination and have successfully helped over 100 senior orthopaedic trainees pass this gruelling test enabling them to apply for substantive consultant positions around the country. In 2020 I was invited to become a member of the Faculty of Trauma and Orthopaedics at the prestigious Postgraduate Medical Institute and The Ameer-ud-Din Medical College with the award of an Honorary Chair in Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery. - Personal Profile I was born and brought up in London and I am married to a GP. I have three children, two large Bernese Mountain dogs named Stan and Jim and enjoy nearly all sports, joints permitting.
