Dr Derek Connolly is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Birmingham City Hospital (UK) and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Birmingham. His main clinical and research interest is the detection and treatment of coronary heart disease. Dr Connolly qualified from the University of Edinburgh summa cum laude in Pharmacology in 1985 and in Medicine in 1988 where he was the Brunton Medalist. As a Carnegie scholar at the University of California San Diego, USA he saw the early promise of angioplasty and changed his career plan from cardiac surgery to coronary intervention. After junior medical jobs in London and Nottingham, Dr Connolly then spent a decade training in Cardiology in Cambridge where he held a British Heart Foundation PhD Fellowship at the University of Cambridge and was Senior Registrar at Papworth and Addenbrookes Hospitals. He was appointed to his current role in Birmingham in 2000 and he has been integral to the early development of both primary angioplasty and cardiac CT programs. Dr Connolly was UK Chief Investigator for the Fourier and Ebbinghaus Trials in cholesterol reduction and has been an investigator in over 30 large landmark trials in the field of cardiovascular disease research. Dr Connolly is a sought after speaker and have presented at conferences in over 50 cities worldwide. He is also a Senior Academy Teacher at the University of Birmingham Medical School. He was recently co-opted to the committee of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society and he has a large role in the education of Primary Care physicians. Dr Connolly is keen to provide the latest evidence based, state of the art, tests and treatments that he would want for his own family and friends.
