I'm a Consultant Psychiatrist working in the NHS in Birmingham and Solihull, and as Professor of Psychiatry at Birmingham University. I have been a Consultant Psychiatrist for over 15 years and worked in many areas of the country and in different areas of Psychiatry, including those specialising in general adult psychiatry, mood disorders, personality disorders and psychosis services. As an academic Psychiatrist, my main interest is in early intervention and mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder and depression. My work focuses on developmental pathways to illness, persistence and care, and ways of improving the clinical and social outcomes of people with mood disorders using both pharmacological and psychological interventions. I have a long-standing interest in measurement and understanding emotional dysregulation transdiagnostically, and as part of this in borderline personality disorder. I am Co-Chair of the International Society of Bipolar Disorders Taskforce on Early Intervention in Bipolar Disorder. I run the Specialist Mood Disorders Clinic in Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust (UK), and as such have the clinical experience of the challenges of the diagnosis and management of bipolar disorder early in the illness course as well as treatment in the established and persistent disorder. I have previously worked in UK Early Intervention for Psychosis teams for around 10 years. I read Medicine, and Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and qualified as a medical doctor at University College London (UCL) completing my postgraduate Psychiatry training there and after a period of working around England and also Germany (for the British army) I took up substantive academic and NHS Consultant positions in 2009 in the Midlands. I was a Clinical Lecturer in Social and Community Psychiatry at UCL before moving on to be a Senior Lecturer and then Reader at the University of Warwick. I took up this current post in 2018.
