Medstars in their Eyes | Mr Marcus Green

Marcus Green

Medstars spoke with Birmingham-based orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Marcus Green.

Having been a consultant for over 18 years, Marcus has acquired a wealth of experience and he performs between 150 and 200 knee and shoulder joint replacements each year.

Marcus has been described as a careful and impressive surgeon by his peers and is highly regarded as one of the West Midlands’ finest knee surgeons.

And as if Marcus’ CV isn’t impressive enough, he flies hot air balloons in his spare time! Yup. You heard us right. Whilst we’re accruing and appealing numerous parking tickets (mainly applicable to Medstars’ Demi Sanders) Marcus is out here improving lives and flying high.

Take it away Marcus…

My friends and family describe me as…

“Just loving life!”

If I wasn’t a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, I would be a…

“Farmer and Forester – keeping traditional pig varieties and growing fantastic woodland (oh and also producing the best smoked bacon in England).”

My favourite element of the job is…

“Knowing the massive difference that orthopaedic surgery makes in improving patients’ lives.”

My greatest professional accomplishment is…

“Being able to just continually produce consistently high quality joint replacement surgery with low complications and long life spans to enhance patients lives.”

My greatest personal accomplishment is…

“Flying hot air balloons competitively at national level and representing Great Britain at European and World Class level on a regular basis.” Below you can see Marcus flying over the field where his Uncle was shot down during the second world war. Though his Uncle survived, the rear gunner and the pilot were killed and so Marcus dropped 20,000 poppy petals over the site in memory of them.”

Marcus on a flight he made in France to drop 20,000 poppy petals over the site of his Uncle’s WWII Lancaster crash site!
I’m inspired by…

“Henry Marsh – neurosurgeon, newspaper commentator and author. He is clearly dedicated to the cause of humanity and intolerant of the foolishness of the modern NHS manager.”

The best advice I have been given is…

“Always take time to smell the roses – I interpret it to mean that however chaotic or busy life is take a few minutes to relax and enjoy beautiful things around you.”

My favourite place to visit is…

“Japan – so far I’ve notched up 9 visits to flying in Japanese balloon competitions.”

The music that makes me happy is…

“Little known short lived session musician group called The Cicadas. My favourite song is probably I Am Still Learning To Fly.” We think that’s very fitting for a hot air balloonist!

I like Medstars because…

“They understand how busy I can be and work with me flexibly.”
