Medstars In Their Eyes | Mr Amir Hamid

Amir Hamid, eye surgeon

Mr Amir Hamid, super-busy consultant ophthalmic surgeon in London, made time for a quick catch up with Medstars.

Approachable and easy to talk to, Amir is an outstanding London-based ophthalmologist with particular expertise in correcting presbyopia i.e. fixing eyesight as it changes with age. He is an expert in laser eye treatment, cataract extraction & lens replacement.

Amir’s believes that every patient is unique and so has different expectations. His ethos centres around a personalised individual treatment plan, giving patients the most up to date evidence and information, so they can make informed decisions about their care.

Now, over to Amir!

My friends and family describe me as…

Someone with a great sense of humour, approachable and very OCD regarding my clinical work!

I love my job because…

I am able to really improve people’s quality of life. The work that I do is lifechanging. It gives my patients a real degree of freedom to do things that they may have not been able to do before.

Before surgery, some of my patients have lacked confidence and not been very outgoing. When they come back to me for follow-up after surgery, it is obvious how their quality of life has changed for the better, and how much happier they feel.

My greatest professional accomplishment is…

I not only enjoy my day-to-day clinical work but also think it’s important to give back to the ophthalmic community. I am heavily involved in teaching junior surgeons the best surgical techniques and how to get the best results for patients. I also give international lectures. For example, tomorrow I am flying to Malaysia, Singapore, Philipines and Vietnam to do a series of lectures. And I will take all my family with me!

If I wasn’t an ophthalmic surgeon, I would be a…

I would love to be a chef! I cook at home all the time, after work, on weekends… My son loves eating, so he makes me cook stuff for him. It is a creative process and funnily enough, there are similarities with working in an operating theatre. If you want to produce a high-quality dish consistently, every step in making that dish is important and they need to be connected so that the final product is as perfect as possible. And you have a similarly rewarding feeling when people enjoy your dish, in my case, my family!

My greatest achievement outside of work is…

Having a wonderful, beautiful family. Without their understanding and support, I wouldn’t be able to do half of the things I am able to do now. And I wouldn’t be as happy as I am now! That’s the greatest achievement that anyone could have.

I’m inspired by…

There have been several people in my life who have inspired me to be the best version of myself I can be. They taught me to always do my best, to believe in myself and treat others with respect. I have been very fortunate to meet these people because they helped me on my journey to where I am now.

My father is the best example of this. He came from a very very poor background in Malaysia, from a small village. He was the first person in his family ever to go to university. He was so poor that in his first year at university he had to wear his school uniform because he didn’t have enough money to buy clothes! He taught me that you can come a long way from a very humble beginning.

The best advice I have been given is…

Always believe in yourself. Everyone has an opinion of you: what you should do and how you should improve your life. You need to be able to analyse that objectively and keep what you think is accurate, otherwise, you can live a very negative life and even end up being someone that you are not.

There are always people ready to tell you what you cannot do in life, that’s why is so important to believe in what you can do. Anything is possible.

My favourite place to visit is…

My home town, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. I love it because that’s where I grew up, but also because it’s a very warm city with really nice people, very welcoming… and it has the most amazing food ever!

Music that makes me happy includes…

I am not very into music, but I have to listen to a lot of my son’s music (his favourite is Ariana Grande), so it makes me happy to see him happy.

I like Medstars because…

It is almost a family-like environment. The team is very approachable and cares about its relationships. This shows the level of attention to detail. This helps not only the clinicians involved, but also the patients when recommendations are made. I love the Medstars approach.
