MD FRCP FRCPath
We highly recommend Dr Prem Mahendra, who works exceptionally hard to achieve the best results for her patients. She specialises in adult blood cancers and is determined to go above and beyond for those in her care, genuinely getting to know each patient as an individual. She has particular expertise in stem cell transplantation, setting up one of the largest centres in the UK.
"I am dedicated to giving you the best possible care at my Birmingham clinic. When rarely not at work and to keep sane I enjoy collecting rare first edition books and travelling."

I was born in Sri Lanka and had my schooling at St Barnabas and St Phillips, Kensington, Ladies College, Colombo and St Catherines Senior School in Twickenham. I studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. I undertook my haematology training at the Royal Marsden, Hammersmith and Addenbrookes Hospital. I was appointed Consultant Haematologist at Mount Vernon/University College Hospital in 1997 and moved to Birmingham in 1998. I have been a Consultant Haematologist at Birmingham since then and was pivotal in setting up the stem cell transplant unit, which now is one of the largest in the UK and performs over 200 transplants a year. My main interest within haematology are haemato-oncology and stem cell transplantation. I have published extensively in this field and have over 80 peer-reviewed publications. I have an active role in management and teaching. I am currently the Associate Medical Director at UHB. I was the Divisional Director from Jan 2007 to November 2013. I was the Lead Cancer Clinician from 2006-2008. I was the Chair of the Haematology Training Committee - 2006 to Feb 2015, and an Examiner for Royal College of Pathology from 1999- present. I regularly give talks at patient conferences including Lymphoma Association and Myeloma UK. When not working you can find me in antiquarian book shops in central London!
